Bonjour,

J'ai vu dans un registres date 1858 d'un eglise les mots "tue par les chars de Montreal a Lachine, comme il assert par le certificate du coroner Joseph Jones..."   "les chars de Montreal" = quoi?

I saw this comment in the church registers dated 1858, does anyone know what "les chars de Montreal" would be?

"les chars" was another word for "train".

Ah!  Merci...today we use "chars" for our cars, rather slang but still in use...thanks for clearing that up!

Very interesting discussion. I did some research for you. First trolley cars in Montreal were pulled by horses. That started in May 1861. The system had 30 miles of lines. The system was electrified in  1892. So if the coroners report was 1858 it was before the trolley. There were trains running at that time. Like you say the word "char" is a slang word used today here in Ontario. I dont know if this answered your question but I tried. Keep smiling and you will overcome those walls. Ray.

Chars is a French slang for car. It's not a train. In Quebec it's still used very frequently.
