Looking for a Jewish Immigration to Quebec Around the 1700's
Date: 2020-10-22 19:09:00

Connie

Hello, my name is Connie (Derosier) Carter. I've recently learned that someone in my family with a Surname of Guyon AKA Dion was from the Jordan area or Southern Israel. most likely Jewish. Ive read that there was a large Jewish Migration at one time to both Toronto and Quebec. Ms Guyon was born in the Southern Israel area but died in the Quebec area. Can anyone help me with the Jewish immigration to Quebec, when it took place and maybe where those families are buried? Are there records for those families? Any leads would be appreciated.

Merci!

Thank you so much for your response. Her name is Marie Josephte Guyon born March 9, 1710 in Grondines, Portneuf, PQ. According to some other records, either her or a close relative was born in Jordan or Southern Israel and migrated to Quebec. I'm wondering if it's possible that the name was changed once her or her relative arrived there. If I follow her line back they all immigrated from France so I'm confused.. Somewhere between her and Aurelie Laplante, born Jan 18, 1849 in Quebec someone came from Israel/Jordan. and I can't find who.Aurelie is my paternal gg grandmother. Any leads would be great. Thank you so much!

Click on Aurelie's father name, Joseph Laplante.  His file will show on left center of the screen.  Then,  click on icon.   You'll get this screen :

The bottom line is Aurelie ancestors through Josephe Guyon. Here's where each one was born;

Marguerite Gazaille, Aurelie's grandmother, was born on August 19th, 1800, at St-Denis-sur-Richelieu.

Ursule Martin was born on November 9th, 1753, also at St-Denis.

Marie-Josephte Messier was born on August 21st, 1734, at Varennes.

I think that your Israel story is related to Marguerite Gazaille.  The GAZA strip is a small Palestinian territory located at the south of Israel.

Hi Connie, don't get your hopes too high... There were very few Jewish people in New France, ano none (that I know of) that left descendants. Furthermore, the family name Gazaille has nothing to do with Gaza; the ancestor comes from the Périgord region of France (south-west of the country).

Good luck in your research!

Ive done a bit of research and found in my brief scanning that there was a fairly large migration of Jews from various countries over time including the Middle East and other places in Europe. Here are some articles I gleaned from:

https://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?pid=1942505

https://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?pid=1942505

These links look the same but should take you to different places. There are many more on PQ and Jewish immigration. I daresay that early on, 1600-1700's, that the Jewish people were not originally welcome, and if that generation of my ancestry tried to immigrate, they may have gone to France first, changed their names, possibly converted to Christianity and then departed for Canada. So, a record of their homeland may be difficult to find. If this is the case. I may be out of options unless someone has a suggestion on how to find their original documents in France. I now have a lead in the region in France (Perigord, Guyenne, France) from a previous post. This is a quest!

Any ideas on what type of documents I can look for in that region or country that might help me?

Ou on se fait niaiser, ou c'est une personne très, très naïve... Bien d'accord pour arrêter. Merci, Yves.

Yves and Claude I have appreciated your help and advice. It may be all for not naught, however, DNA has strongly suggested there is a link. I will look a little more and then stop looking myself. Thanks again!
