Hello from Maine, I'm curious to know if you folks can see any other children for:
ID No: 1171183
Firstname: Julien
Name: Caouette
In particular, I'm interested if there is a "Louis Caouette"
I have a booklet named "Famille (Caouette) Gaouette histoire et genealogie : notes diverses", which tells a most interesting story of Julien Caouette, and how he was taken away by an Indian at 5 years old, and returned at 15 years old (St-Denis-sur-Richelieu region)..
A fascinating tale, and I believe that same Julien may be my ancestor, but in this booklet, he had a son "Louis Caouette", who would be a sibling to my G G Great Grandfather, "Joseph Alphonse Gaouette",(b. 1869) son of Julien

If you look carefully, there are actually 2 Louis on the site. Reach Julien and Lucie Phaneuf files with this link :
https://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?genealogie=Caouette_Julien&pid=1171183
and scroll up the page. You'll reach the section "bachelors and spinters" ( or "enfants célibatiares" in french ) childrens for this couple. In these 14 Alphonse siblings, there is Louis-Evariste, born in 1858, and Louis-Elphege born in 1867, deceased in 1868.

It's interesting that Caouette became Gaouette..
We have wondered if it was related to the Indian story: perhaps I need to get you copies of the text(which is in French), and see what you can make of it..

It has nothing to do with the Indians. Our ancestors were illiterate and they pronounced their names as they had heard. The priest, who was educated, wrote the name according to what he heard. When the descendants learned to read and write, they perpetuated the priest’s spelling.

Who is the author of this booklet ? Probably a religious. I read the Indian’s story and I think it’s exactly that, a story. Some of the details are unbelievable.
