Rich
Greetings friends.
I would like to please ask for assistance in finding the (paternal)family line of this person noted above.
I have a notarized marriage certificate that shows his father as: "Nelson Gaouette"
However, other sources have his parents are listed as Narcisse/ Nelson / Justin / Julien Gouet & Lucie
Phaneuf likely of Canad.
I am having difficulty in establishing whether I am looking for Goguet Goyette Caouette or Gaouetteor Gaouet... etc.
Any reply will be greatly appreciate!
I have been looking for some time with no positive success.
Thank you in advance!
Kindest regards,
Rich Gouette

Rich,
I think you should look for Caouette. I just add on this site the marriage of Julien and Lucie Phaneuf. So, you can take a look at the whole lineage of Caouette in America.
But to be sure if this is your lineage, you should give the names of both parents. You should see the name of his mother on the notarized certificate. If not, can you give us the name of his wife. Maybe we will be able to find something with that.
Yves.

Roger, how many
Gaouette can you find on PRDH ???
Rich, priest who wrote vital records were not so educated. Some of them had trouble to write french correctly. Our ancestors were illiterate and could not correct the spelling. So imagine an american english clerk trying to write in french. Many times you can decipher names by using phonetic spelling. Lucy Fenneff and Lucie Phaneuf is a good example of a phonetic spelling.
Caouette is the standardize written form for this patronym.
Here's links to records. First, Julien and Lucie Phaneuf in St-Denis :
Second, Julien and Emilie Paré in St-Denis :
Finally, here's Julien and Marie Royer in St-Hyacinthe. In this parish, the priest used the spelling Kaouët :

I completely agree with you Yves, the origin for the name is surely Caouette.
However, many descendants have choosen to go on with Gaouette...
There are many "Gaouette's" on the "NosOrigines site.
Have a good day!

Yves, I want to thank you very much for what you have shown so far.
Until now, I had not found Julien to be Alphonse's father
That is quite interesting!
Many in my family are enjoying my humble efforts, and I am eager to explain the next
links in the family.
Regards,
Rich

Rich,
Now we know were Narcisse is coming from. Why did he used another first name ? We don't know. Remember that his father Julien was living in the same village.

Rich,
You said that Alphonse got married in 1893 but you didn't named his wife. Is she Margaret McCallum ?
If you have any marriage of Alphonse' brothers or sisters, let me know.
I think I found Evariste married to Delia Carette. As the 1920 US census, Lucie was living with them.

Ok thank you.
The reason I ask is because we are reading from La Famille Gaouette(Caouette) that
"Remi Gaouette says (to the author of the booklet) that his grand-father Louis spoke, sang and danced like a 'savage', and that he said had learned it all from his father, that is believed to be Julien."
I'm sure you are familiar with that publication, so perhaps you might have insight?
Many thanks for your excellent guidance.

Sorry, Rich, I don't know this booklet. I think that Remi was the son of Louis and Theotiste Laplante. If so, his grand-father was Henri Caouette, born in 1756 in Cap St-Ignace.
