Hello - I've been told that Augustin Romain had Metis status.

Does anyone know how this could be?

Thank you, cat

Hello Catherine,

Since the marriage record of Adam Romain and Marguerite Picard was not found, people assume that Augustin Romain's parents are Joseph Romain and Marguerite Picard, married at Village Huron.

However, other documents and records show that Augustin is most likely the illegitimate son of Adam Rohman, who was married to Josephte Moreau c. 1790 in Albany NY.

Augustin Romain was born c. 1795 (probably out of wedlock) to Adam Rohman, a former soldier from the Brunswick troops and Marguerite Picard (d/o Jean-Baptiste & Marie-Louise Bonneron).

Adam Rohman, born Dornstadt ou de Frellstedt (Braunschweig), age 24 years 2 months, was discharged from the Brunswick troops June 26, 1783. He joined the Royal Voluntary Regiment and was stationed for a while in Albany NY.

Marguerite Picard had a sister, Marie-Louise, who was married August 20, 1787 to Frederick Wagner, a butcher and also former soldier from the Hesse-Hanau german auxiliary troop (Jager company).

Adam Rohman was married to Josephe Moreau (probably Albany NY, probably by a military chaplain). He had three children known children : John (bpt. Dec. 15 1784, Trois-Rivieres protestant church) who was married in 1816 to Helen McLaughling and Marguerite who was married 1815 to Joseph Wagner (a butcher), son of Frederick Wagner and Marie-Louise Picard.

Marguerite Romaine was godmother of Marie-Elmire, daughter of Augustin Romaine & Adelaide Brisebois, July 27, 1824 at Notre-Dame de Montreal (godfather : Francois Danielson, a butcher). Interesting fact about Adam Rohman (Roman, Romain) : he was also a butcher by trade. So was Augustin Romain.

The Romain brothers : Jacob, Augustin and Adam (Jr.) were all in this region in the early 1800s working for Philemon Wright and in the militia.

Adam Romain Jr. drowned in 1815 along with Benjamin Moore at Little Chute de la Chaudiere.
