Please help an Australian! I am looking for any information about Henry Ross-Lewin (aka Harrison Ross-Lewin) and his wife Genevieve Perrier (aka Jane Perrier). Henry was a Lieutenant in the British 70th Regiment of Foot and was stationed in various parts of Canada from the early 1800's until at least 1830 I believe. He was from County Clare, Ireland. I have them marrying anywhere from 1807 to 1813 and I'm not sure in which country.

I found an entry on Ancestry.com for Quebec regarding a daughter Jourevieve Rosslewin(could this be incorrectly spelt and really be Genevieve). Parents are Henry Ross-Lewin and Jane Perrier. Godparents are Philippe Aubert de Gaspe and Eliza Ann Baby. If somebody could help me with the translation I would be very grateful.

I am hoping to discover exactly who Henry's wife Genevieve (Jane) Perrier is. Could she be Canadian? I am also interested in any of their children. I know daughters Anna Maria and Sophia Elizabeth were born in Canada but I don't know where or when. There may be other siblings.

Henry's uncle Ralph Ross-Lewin was married to Archange Baby so I am assuming that Philippe Aubert de Gaspe and Eliza Ann Baby may be relatives. Ralph was the Town Major for Quebec. Information about any of these people would also be welcomed.

I am happy to do any research myself if you can point me in the right direction.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Simone Louise

There is a marriage between Philippe Aubert de Gaspé and Susanne Allison in 1811 in Québec City. His parents were Philippe Ignace Aubert de Gaspé and Catherine Tarieu.

I also see an Elisa-Anne Baby married to Charles-Eusèbe Casgrain in 1824, also in Québec City. Her parents were Jacques Baby and Elisabeth Abbott.

Given the time and place, these are probably the right people.

Thank you Gilbert. They certainly seem to be the correct time-frame. It appears that they are both published authors in your part of the country which means that there will be some fantastic information to research. I am really getting drawn into the history of Quebec!

The biggest problem I now have is trying to work out who Genevieve Perrier is. I don't know how to find this information. The document I mentioned on Ancestry says she is "de cette ville". Does this mean she is from Quebec originally or she just lived there at the time? I apologise for my poor French language skills.

Simone,
Here's the translation, line for line, of Genevieve Eliza baptism :

September the twenty, one thousand eight hundred nineteen,
we, undersigned, priest vicar of Québec,
baptized Geneviève Eliza, arisen august ten
from the legitimate marriage of Sieur Henry Rosslewin,
lieutenant in the seventieth regiment of his British majesty, and
from Jane Parira of this city.
The godfather was Philippe Aubert de Gaspé,
Sword-bearer shériff  of the district of Quebec. The godmother
Damoiselle  Eliza Anne Baby who, as well as
the father signed with us.

"De cette ville" means parents were living in the town.

Here's a link for a bio of  Philippe Aubert.  On the same site, search for Jacques Baby.

About the Jane's last name, the priest wrote it phonetically.

Yves.

I looked on Internet and saw that the Ross-Lewin was a rich family in Ireland.  I would bet that Henry got married in Europe.  I found nothing else about Henry and Jane in Québec.

Eliza Anne Baby was minor at her marriage with Charles Casgrain in 1824.  That means she was born around 1804.  So, she was about 15 years old at the Geneviève Eliza baptism.

Thank you so much Yves. The translation is very helpful.

You are correct. The Ross-Lewin's are Landed Gentry in Ireland and featured in Burke's genealogy. Genevieve Perrier is listed as "Jane Pereira". I also have her surname as Parira and Pariva. The certificates of her children here have her as Perrier. I think I will have to order some military records to sort this out.

I followed your links and read the biographies, then spent the next few hours reading some of the works of Philippe Aubert de Gaspe and Eliza Ann Baby (Casgrain). The Eliza Ann Casgrain book refers quite a bit to her Aunt Ross-Lewin (Archange Baby). Unfortunately for me it is mostly in French!

Once again, thank you for your help.
