Back to record of: Stephen Otis
The Ancestry of J.G. Williams & Ursula Miller », 2013).
IN ENGLISH:
Like his father, Stephen Otis died in the Cochecho massacre, during the night of June 27-28, 1689. His wife Mary also died. Three of their children (Stephen, Rose, and Nathaniel) were taken to New France. Mary was also taken, but later rescued (Jim Schneider and Holly Rubin in "The Ancestry of J.G. Williams & Ursula Miller," 2013).
Mary Otis (born about 1675 according to Find A Grave and the NEHGR) married Ebenezer Varney, son of Humphrey and Sarah Starbuck, in Dover. Mary and Ebenezer were Quakers.
It is known that Richard II, Stephen's brother, and his wife were Quakers and that Richard I at least sympathized with the Quakers. Stephen and his wife Mary may also have been Quakers. The Quakers (or the "Friends") were, among other things, pacifists and early promoters of the abolition of slavery.
In French America, Stephen is called Joseph-Marie; Rose is called Françoise Otis, Françoise-Rose Otis, or Françoise Rozotty; and Nathaniel is called Paul.
