While striving to untangle the web of contradictory documentary sources on the Otis family of Cochecho, some have wondered if there were two Richard Otis', or a single one. The perusal of older references such as the following dissipates any doubt. Let's look at one of several interesting quotes, which clearly demonstates the existence of a Richard II, married to "Susanna" and son of Richard I.
"Richard Otis was not a Quaker himself, but his son Richard 2 became one. He, (Richard 1) was fined for non-attendance on public worship in 1663, in company mith [sic] many others of the minority, some of whom were well known for piety, but who disliked the Established Church. (...) After the birth of his second child, and perhaps earlier, [Richard 2] became a 'Friend'."

The term "Friend" is another name for the Quakers, who were, among other things, pacifists and early promoters of the abolition of slavery. Richard I' absence from the "meetings" was a protest behavior encountered among Quakers, which would have made him a sympathizer.
