Newman C. Hutchings was an interior, exterior house painter in Yakima, Washington from 1902. He painted some of the finest homes in the area including the legendary Congdon Castle in West Yakima Valley. The type of paint he used was his downfall. He developed lead poisoning and his illness forced his retirement in 1906. After his beloved Mary's death in 1922, he went to live with his daughter Muriel and her husband Avilla Fortier until they could no longer care for him. Newman died in a retirement home in 1936 and was buried in Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Washington.
