Marie Anne Giraudon departed Hôpital-Général de la Salpêtrière of Paris on June 1720 at the age of 21. She sailed aboard La Baleine with 88 other orphan girls, accompanied by Sister Gertrude from the Hôpital-Général, anchoring off the Gulf Coast at Mobile Bay on 8 Jan 1721. These girls had come to Louisiane to marry, much like the filles du roi came to Quebec.
