Biography:
Joseph Bastien was born April, 1850 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as the first child of Joseph Villiot dit LaTour and Sophie Potel Complaisance. He was baptized as Joseph Villiot dit Latour. He is listed in various records as Joseph John Villiotte, Joseph Villiot, but mostly went by Joseph Bastien most of his life in Minnesota.
He had two siblings that survived early childhood, namely Charles and Cordelia. As shown in the 1861 Canadian census, he is still living in Montreal. Sometime between 1866-1871, the entire family moved to St Paul, Minnesota. On June 26, 1871, when he was 21, he married Rosalie Dufort, daughter of Jean Louis Bougret dit Dufort and Marie-Rose Chartrand, in St Paul, Minnesota at the St. Louis, King of France church. Joseph and Rosalie would have four children together, three of whom survived early childhood. They were Sophie Mary, born in 1872, Georgianna, born in 1874, and Rosalie Emma, born in 1876. His wife Rosalie died July 13, 1879 at the age of 32.
About one year later, when he was 30, he married Marie Louise Rose Auger, daughter of Amable Auger (blacksmith) and Margaret Breault, on July 18, 1880 in St. Louis church, St. Paul, Minnesota. The 1880 census shows he was employed as a stone cutter, and he appears to have worked that job his entire life. Joseph and Marie Louise had six children together between 1881-1891. They were John Joseph, Nelson, Joseph Paul, Marie Virginia, Peter Samuel and MARIE LAURA BLANCHE. About five months after the birth of their last child, Marie Louise died on January 24, 1892 at the age of 30.
Joseph only lived another 5 ½ years, and died September 17, 1897 at the age of 47. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St Paul, Minnesota.
