Joseph was living in the parish of St. Martin, diocese of Quebec in the vicinity of Kingston, on the American shore. He moved to Detroit before 1794.
In 1797 he purchased a tract of land from Francis Babi situated on the River Rouge. (The name Babi is how Baby Creek Park now known as General George Patton Park received it's name, and this is the location of the above purchase).
Two years later Joseph purchased from auction from Louis Bond, sheriff of Wayne County, Lot 3 with house and appurtenances on the NW side of River Rouge about three acres in front of said River.
