Jack H. Porath, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, at Marquette General Hospital at the remarkable age of 94 years.
Jack was the son of Gustaf and Grace (Lasway) Porath. He was raised in Hyde and attended the New Hall School. Jack left school at a young age, as many youngsters did during those years, and went to work on various local farms throughout the area. In June of 1942, Jack received his draft notice to report for training in the United States Army. This unfortunate notice came just two days after he was scheduled to be united in marriage. Jack was joined in marriage to the former Marcella Chouinard and together the couple, eventually, gave birth to six children. Jack served in the United States Army, during World War II, in the South Pacific Theatre, as a heavy truck driver. During his enlistment, he received medals of accommodation which included the Good Conduct Medal and three Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged at Camp McCoy, Wis., in December of 1945 following three in a half years of dedicated service. Following his discharge, Jack returned home to Schaeffer.
His wife, Marcella, preceded him in death. On June 11, 1966, Jack was united in marriage to Rita Lauzon-Valiquette and together the couple made their home and raised their family of 12 in Schaeffer and Pine Ridge. Jack was employed for many years as a mechanic/machinist at Northern Motor Rebuilders. During the nights and weekends, he worked as a bartender at Potvin's Tavern in Schaeffer. He and Rita later moved to Gladstone where they have remained since. Jack was a member of All Saints Church in Gladstone. In addition, he was a proud member and post commander of the Bark River American Legion Post 438 for two terms and Fourth Degree Knight in the K.O.C Council 640. Jack was instrumental in the establishment of Schaeffer's Little League program, where he coached for many years. His hobbies included, hunting, fishing, bowling, horseshoes, gardening and playing cards at church. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his loving wife, Rita; survivors include his two sons, eight daughters, a sister, 42 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Gustaf and Grace; and his first wife, Marcella; Jack was preceded in death by daughters, Lana and Barbara; brothers, Leslie, Donald, Lawrence, Earl, James, William, Glen and Robert Porath.
Visitation at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Knight's of Columbus Council 640 services and Military rites conducted by the Bark River American Legion Post 438. Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Church with his nephew, Rev. Fr. Glenn Theoret, officiating. Burial in the Schaeffer Cemetery.
