HMCS ST. THOMAS earned honours on Dec. 27, 1944, when she sank a German submarine.
For years, the ship's bell hung at city hall; more recently, it has been part of the collection of the ELGIN MILITARY MUSEUM.
Now, the bell and other local artifacts from the St. Thomas (and a German escape lung believed from the sunken U-877) are in Quebec City. The museum has loaned them to the NAVAL MUSEUM OF QUEBEC for an exhibition it has developed on the St. Thomas and the submarine's sinking.
(The Naval Museum -- www.mnq-nmq.org -- is dedicated to Cmdr. Joseph Alexis Stanislas Dery. Main contributor to the museum?s founding collection, he was second in command on the St. Thomas.)
