Adam Lalonde emigrated to the US about 1861-63. He reportedly had worked on ships on the St. Lawrence and later on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. He came to Fort Benton, Montana on the Missouri River, moved to Helena, Montana; did some gold prospecting, apparently with some success; owned a hotel in Helena that burned down; and then moved to Missoula, Montana where he married my great grandmother Lucy (Wells) Bisson in 1886. They had seven daughters and one son that died young. Adam was one of the early settlers of Missoula and owned a ranch west of town. He made one trip back to Canada about 1906, which appears to have been about the time his mother died. Interestingly, both my mother's family and father's family are also related to several of the families that were in Deerfield.

The Lalonde Ranch belong to Adam August Lalonde. The ranch once covered at least 1200 acres, but only the house and a few buildings are left on an acre or two. Missoula County owned the property and there were plans to make it a historic site.
