The parish records of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade mention the births of Benjamin (April 19, 1797), Élisabeth (Oct 20, 1799) and Marie (Nov. 25, 1801). However, we learn by a contract that another son Thomas was born on Feb 6, 1805, the place is unknown.

Three children were adopted by contracts in front of the public notary Augustin Trudel at Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade.

3016 - 24-06-1808 - Greffe A. Trudel. Engagement.

Augustin Trudel notary, Extract of minute 3016. (Free translation by GRT) Commitment: Sally Willington, living in St. Anne widow of Samuel Searle medical doctor deceased in St. Anne a few days ago, taking into consideration that she is taking care of four young children, that she is in the last degree of poverty (indigence) and that she is at the mercy of people and has no means, talent or capacity to earn living and feeding her children, neither to give them any education; considering that her husband before he died told her that he wishes that the Honorable Charles Tarieu de Lanaudière, the seigneur (feudal lord) of St. Anne has accepted to look after one the children to raise him as a good Christian, to educate him and show him how to earn a living till his majority, conditions that the seigneur here present has accepted and could not refuse as it was the will of the late husband. For all causes and reasons, Sally Willington has voluntarily given to Charles Tarieu sieur de Lanaudière one of her daughters named Elizabeth, eight years, seven months and four days old, to keep her till her majority, that is 21 years, in the quality of adopted child. Charles Tarieu sieur de Lanaudière accepts all conditions.

The same day an identical contract was sign, with the same text

3017 - 24-06-1808 - Greffe A. Trudel. Engagement.

Benjamin Searle eleven years, three months and five days old, son of Sally Willington, is adopted by François Minier/Lagassé. Very good signature of Sally Searle. This François Minier was the godfather of Benjamin at his baptism.

August 26th, 1808. Thomas of three years, six months and 20 days old is adopted by Charles Dolbec.

3063 - 26-08-1808 - Greffe A. Trudel. Engagement.

So, Samuel Searle died around June 20, 1808. Marie was not adopted. However, in her birth record, her godmother was Marie Pruno, mère nourricière, which means that she has been adopted Marie. I will make another verification on the records of Augustin Trudel to know if Marie was adopted.

And as they are all protestant, three children were baptized in the Catholic Religion a few days later, on July 3, 1808 : Benjamin, Elisabeth and Marie. NOTE: The Catholic records mention the mother as Sara and the notary contracts mention Sally, which must be more reliable.

We know that Élizabeth Searle got married to Étienne Bouchard at St. Vallier de Bellechasse (and not at St. Henri de Lauzon) on Feb 5, 1822. I have seen this marriage act (record) where it is said that Elizabeth lives at St. Vallier. At that time her parents Samuel and Sally were deceased.

I have looked over the registers of Berthier-en-haut and Berthier-en-bas and found no trace of the name Searle. However, at the baptisms of her children, Sally mentions that she leaves in Berthier. We should notice that Elisabeth got married at St.Vallier de Bellechasse which is located a few miles west of Berthier-en-bas or Berthier-sur-mer, not far from Quebec City. So, we may presume that Sally had some kind of relations with people in that region and was living in Berther-en-bas.

Doctor Samuel Searle died at St. Anne-de-la-Pérade but was not buried there. The family could have move to Quebec City and to Berthier-en-bas, where their last child could have been born. At that time, many protestant people were living in Quebec City and the Searle family probably wanted to join them. These are speculations.

As this story is extremely interesting, I will make researches around Quebec City to know more about that, especially the record of the death of Samuel, which could reveal some data on his origin. Even if their children became catholics, the parents remained protestant. So, I will look into the different protestant church records.
