SHE'S 92, BUT SHE CAN STILL PICK APPLES.

In a surprise gathering at the Douro Parish Hall recently the family of Mrs. Mary Esther Devlin honoured her on the occasion of her 92nd birthday.

An active woman all her life, Mrs. Devlin, the daughter of the late Richard Carveth and Josephine Leclair, has enjoyed good health, good food and good friends and good neighbours.

Mrs. Devlin born in 1883, was the third generation of her family to be born in Douro Township. The Carveth Homestead is just one-quarter of a mile from where she has spent her entire married life in Indian River.

Mrs. Devlin's husband died in 1935. They were married in May 1908. She has five sons - Adrian, Thomas, and David of Peterborough, James ofIndian River with whom she now resides, and John of Stratford. Also she has two daughters Ann (Mrs. Darcy Dunlop) of Hamilton, and Helen (Mrs. Pat Paszt) of Cobourg. One daughter Josephine,(Mrs. Dan Pearson) has predeased her. Mrs. Devlin also has one Brother Arthur of Hastings and one sister, Aldine (Mrs. Fred Denoble) of Peterborough. There are 37 grandchildren and 20 Great-grandchildren.

Mrs Devlin attributes her long and healthy life to being very active. This past summer she picked strawberries and rasberries and now apples, and she thinks nothing of walking a mile or two. She also knits, crochets, and loves to haunt antique shops because it brings back fond memories of days gone by.

She was instumental in some of the research that was done for Douro's homecoming celebration in July. Also she is presented in Douro's book "Through the years in Douro".

A fountain of knowledge, Mrs. Devlin can recall her first days in No. 1 School, Douro and of being driven in a horse and cutter with her brother Arthur.

An avid traveller, she has travelled most of Ontario and Quebec. Her greatest enjoyment is when her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are home to visit her.

At the dinner Father F.K.Malane gave his blessing and former MPP John Turner, presented her with a plaque. A telegram was received from Governor General Leger.

As master of ceremonies her youngest son John read a congratulatory letter from Prime Minister Trudeau and Hugh Faulkner M.P.
