Antoine Jacques, for over three score years a resident of Woonsocket, died at his home, Smithfield Rd., near Park Square, this morning at 7:15 o'clock of chronic bronchitis, in his 77th year. Mr Jacques had been in poor health for the past two years, but was able to be about until yesterday. He took to his bed last evening and suffered a sudden turn for the worse. becoming weaker until the end came.'
Mr. Jacques was one of the first French-Canadian settlers in this city coming here from Canada, 64 years ago at the age of 13 years. He was born in St. Cuthbert, Quebec, 18 January 1839. For 30 years he was emplyed by the City Lumber company, later becoming gatekeeper at the Taft-Pierce Manufacturing Company plant for a while. He retired 12 years ago.
He was highly esteemed by his many acquaintances for his many amiable traits, and was ever willing to help the needy by words or deeds. His pleasant disposition endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He had always been a home-loving man and was always devoted to his family.
On 13 August 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Eleanor Harpin, who survives him at St. Charles Church. He was a parishioner of St. Charles Church before the founding of the Precious Blood Parish. No observance of the golden wedding anniversary of the aged couple was made last August because of the ill-health of Mr. Jacques. His wife, who is age 79 years, is enjoyed good health for one so far advanced in years.
Mr. Jacques was one of the founders of Counsel No. 2, Union St. Jean-Baptiste and some years ago took an active interest in the welfare of the society. He was also an old member of Institute Canadien, No. 4, Union St. Jean-Baptiste. He belonged to the Union of Prayer and the Holy Order of the Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Family Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Henri and George Jacques and mrs. J. W. Coutu of Smithfield Road. He is also survived by a brother, Onesime Jacques, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Cabana of Woonsocket, and Mrs. Narcisse Ethier of St. Robert, Quebec.
The funeral will be held from his late home Saturday morning at 8:15 o'clock. A high mass of requiem will be sung at 9 o'clock at Holy Family church. Interment will take place in the family lot at Precious Blood Cemetery.
