Church of Ploujean
Jan Roc'hiou or Jean Rioux has been Christianized in this small church in Ploujean close to Morlaix the 20th of March 1652. It is estimated, that he arrived in Quebec in his early twenties, around 1672 - 1677. Let's imagine the live of our ancestor, what he saw before he left for New France.

When he was 21 the minister Colbert raised new taxes on tobacco and stamped documents whitout asking the permission of the Parliament "États généraux" of Brittany.

The population was outraged. The revolt of the bonnets rouges (red cap) known as well under the name "the revolt of stamped paper" starts and was one of the most bloody of Brittany's history. The repression was cruel and brutal. All the mass executions and hangings where not counted any more. One of the centers of the mutiny was in Kergloff, just a little bit south of Morlaix where our Jean Rioux passed his youth.

The "taureau" in the bay of Morlaix built
in 1689 in Vauban style. Jean Rioux saw
an older tower of the 16th century.

At the head of the mutiny was Sébastien le Balp who installed a notary office with the marriage portion of his wife Anne Riou at Kergloff. The 11th July 1675 the situation explose, 6.000 farmers of Saint-Hernin, Kergloff and other parishes around storm the castle of Kergoat at Saint-Hernin. Its owner, Toussaint de Trevigny, was well known for his hardness for the poor farmers and had already lived some smaller mutinies. The rebellion passed, the marquise de Montgaillard de Poullaouen, estimated that more than 200 houses and castles of nobles have been destroyed and plundered. Did our Jean Rioux participate at this mutinner?

Jean Rioux went from time to time to the very close town of Morlaix on the Market or to execute some work or duties. The typical houses of the old part of Morlaix date from this time. Discover this fantastic town with its charming inhabitants. A huge railway bridge dominates nowadays the landscape of Morlaix.

Cairn of Barnenez in the village of Pluezoc'h

Jean Rioux went as well to Dourduff which is less than an hour of walk from Ploujean. Douduff is a magical spot where you should not miss have a drink on the pavement of the only bistro and observe the fishermen and the cultivators of oysters. If you go there in June you can enjoy the sun as late as 11 PM with a few tourists only. The sun goes down much later than in Quebec. Close from Douduff Jean Rioux could admire the Cairns of Barnenez in the small village of Pluezoch'h. Probably close to these prehistorically grave monuments with its magnificent  view on the bay of Morlaix watching the sailing-ships passing he thought about leave France and immigrate to New France hoping to have a better future. There was a second Cairn which Jean could see, but unfortunately an unscrupulous entrepreneur used it in the 1960th as a stone-pit.
