Information, autres enfants, notes, etc.
Danielle passed away in Iowa City, Iowa (University of Iowa Hospital) following a bone marrow transplant for leukemia (CML) from her five year old brother Michael on October 20th 1989. The bone marrow transplant was successful but doctors were unable to successfully irradiate the cancer cells with radiation & chemotherapy due to Danielle's young age and she succumbed to an unknown viral infection in her sinuses five days after her sixth birthday. Danielle's sixth birthday was celebrated in Iowa City with parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins at her bedside.
Danielle's operation was paid for by crowdsource funding to the Danielle Hebert Trust Fund. At the time of Danielle's transplant there were less than thirty attempts at a 'mismatched' related donor transplant. This was considered experimental at the time and not covered by RAMQ (Quebec medicare). The Danielle Hebert Trust Fund was successful in raising nearly $250 000 to pay for the transplant and related costs. The funds were collected through a series of potluck dinners, dances, nightclub cover charge, BBQs, carwash and any other method available before the world wide web. Both the media and the public at large embraced the cause and funds were collected from many corners of the world.
Shortly before Danielle's passing the RAMQ decided to pay for the Iowa City transplant and related costs, the remaining Danielle Hebert Trust was donated to the Canadian Cancer Society (Montreal) with an atrium named in her honour.
